Recently I visited the Smith-Gilbert Arboretum in Kennesaw where they are growing a number of interesting hollies including the cultivar of our native American holly, Ilex opaca 'Maryland Dwarf. Unlike the typical species which can reach 30 feet to 50 feet tall in our region, 'Maryland Dwarf' reaches 3 feet high at maturity with a spread of up to 10 feet wide. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
