    I found a food history Web site with a quote from Medieval Arab Cookery by Charles Perry that said there was something called a judhaba that sounds very much like a gyro being served in Baghdad in the ninth century. And according to the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, gyros are not as well known in Greece as they are in the United States, although they may have originated in the Plaka neighborhood of Athens.
