News, Reviews, and Articles on Radiation

Raise tower to cut costs?  Oct 5, 2009
Cell towers release the same amount of radiation as a cellphone, an extremely low dose, according to David Carpenter, director of the Institute of Health and the Environment at University at Albany. Cellphones and towers emit non-ionizing radiation, a far less intense form of energy than the ionized radiation associated with radioactive forms, like X-ray tubes. (Albany Times Union)

Researchers Still Uncertain on Cell Safety  Sep 15, 2009
As this research becomes public, some well-respected scientists in the fields of cancer research, epidemiology, electrical and computer engineering, and electromagnetic radiation say they see reason for concern, while others say it is much too soon to make judgments ... At this point, researchers have strong data indicating how much radiation that humans absorb through cell phone use ... Thanks to the work of scientists, such as by Niels Kuster, a radiation expert at the Swiss Federal Institute... (CBS News)

Senator to look into cell phone-cancer link  Sep 15, 2009
"This part of the spectrum is known as non-ionizing radiation," she told the hearing, explaining that this means radio waves cannot damage the DNA in cells. But Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter pressed her on this, asking her repeatedly whether science had conclusively proved there was no connection. (MSNBC -- Health)

Mobile Phone Masts Are Dangerous - The Plain Truth  Aug 21, 2009
These masts emit non-ionizing radiation that is dangerous to human beings. The Good Book in Hosea 4: 6 states: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge ." But thank God, now knowledge is awash and anyone who seeks knowledge can have access to it by the courtesy of the Internet. (Ghana Web, Ghana)

Cellcom Israel Announces Second Quarter 2009 Results and Strengthens its Position as the Market Leader  Aug 17, 2009
While the Ministry of Communication recommended that, given the difficulties in obtaining permits for the construction of cell sites, the exemption should be reviewed after the lapse of one to two years from the approval of the new National Zoning Plan 36, to verify that it provides an adequate solution that allows the cellular operators to provide required communication services, the Ministries of Interior and Environmental Protection recommended that the exemption be annulled within 6 months... Scientist says co-location of masts will not reduce emissions  Jul 15, 2009
Accra, July 14, GNA - Mr Joseph Kwabena Amoako, a Research Scientist at the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI) of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), on Tuesday said co-location of telecom masts would not reduce the amount of radio frequency (RF) emissions into the atmosphere ... In a written response to a questionnaire from GNA, he stated that the concern about RF emissions would only be addressed if measures were put in place to ensure that the radiations were within acceptable limits... Radiation from telecom masts and our health  Jul 9, 2009
Accra, July 6, GNA - A few years back a huge global scare about the cancerous effects of radio frequency radiations (RFR) from mobile handsets gained capital in the Ghanaian media. Warnings were that mobile handsets should not be held close to the ear because the radiations could cause brain tumour, mobile handsets should not be put in the breast pocket because the radiations could affect the heart and mobile handsets should not be put in the side pocket because radiations could cause... IAEA calls for enhanced radiation protection of patients  Apr 30, 2009
But radiation safety experts at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) say that overuse of high-tech scanning procedures may unnecessarily expose patients to increased radiation levels ... The focus of recent efforts is a Smart Card project, to log how much radiation a person receives in the course of a lifetime ... Concern surrounds procedures such as computed tomography (CT) scans because they deliver higher doses of radiation to patients in comparison to conventional X-rays... (EurekAlert! -- Business News)

The Saga of Permits for Telecom Masts  Apr 11, 2009
The nature of the complaints include masts erected without neighbourhood consent; masts close to people's homes and to schools, causing parents to removed their children from those schools; noise, fumes and vibration from generators on cells sites causing respiratory problems and disturbing peoples' sleep; and most of all the health concerns about the emission of non-iodizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation from telecom infrastructure. The public concern about radiation is based on... (Ghana Web, Ghana)

Team develops new metamaterial device  Feb 25, 2009
CHESTNUT HILL, MA (February 24, 2009) An engineered metamaterial proved it can function as a state-of-the-art device in the complex terahertz range of the electromagnetic spectrum, setting a standard of performance for modulating tiny waves of radiation, according to a team of researchers from Boston College, the Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories, and Boston University ... The discovery marks a milestone in the use of metamaterials and terahertz radiation, a safe, non-ionizing... (EurekAlert!)
