Kylie has been fed primarily through a catheter with Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). It takes more effort for the liver to metabolize TPN and one of the concerns for Kylie's future depended on getting the small bowel transplant as quickly as possible so there would be no substantial liver damage, which could have required an additional liver transplant.
