Buckley believes SCID may actually be as prevalent as PKU, an inherited metabolic disorder that is routinely identified and treated through newborn screening.     Anyone with PKU (phenylketonuria -- a problem of phenylalanine, an amino acid, metabolism) should not use aspartame. MSG (monosodium glutamate) -- common allergic and behavioural reactions, including headaches, dizziness, chest pain, depression and mood swings, also a possible neurotoxin. (India Times, India)

    In 1998 NSW led the world in funding high-tech screening in all newborns for 30 rare metabolic disorders on top of the more well-known conditions identified by the heel-prick test, such as cystic fibrosis and phenylketonuria (PKU). While this screening has since been implemented in other developed countries, the research by the Childrens Hospital at Westmead and the University of Technology, Sydney, is the first to measure the effectiveness of screening for babies and cost.
