Genetic links to fungal infection risk identified  Oct 29, 2009
The findings have implications for people suffering from chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC), as well as more common infections like vaginal candidosis (thrush). The UCL-led research focused on patients from multiple generations of a large family who had suffered from serious recurrent fungal infections that proved lethal in some of those affected. Human Dectin-1 Deficiency and Mucocutaneous Fungal Infections  Oct 29, 2009
We describe a family in which four women who were affected by either recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis or onychomycosis had the early-stop-codon mutation Tyr238X in the -glucan receptor dectin-1. The mutated form of dectin-1 was poorly expressed, did not mediate -glucan binding, and led to defective production of cytokines (interleukin-17, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin-6) after stimulation with -glucan or Candida albicans. BDSI awarded grant from Walter Reed  Oct 7, 2009
Currently, the drug, which is used to treat systemic fungal infections such as Esophageal Candidiasis and parasitic diseases such as Leishmaniasis, is delivered intravenously. Once-daily Pill Effective As Multiple Dosings For Oral Yeast Infection In HIV/AIDS Patients  Sep 18, 2009
Researchers found that a small tablet applied daily that sticks to the gum and dissolves inside the mouth with few or no side effects is a novel, convenient option for treating an infection called oral candidiasis (OC), which occurs in about one third to one half of HIV patients and up to 90 percent of AIDS patients. The study is believed to be the largest to date involving HIV/AIDS patients with OC. The infection is also common in patients suffering from many forms of cancer, especially those... (Science Daily)

UTSA professors win stimulus-backed grants  Aug 11, 2009
He will use his grant to study biofilms formed by the fungus, which causes infections called candidiasis. Candidiasis can be life-threatening in hospital patients with suppressed immune systems. (San Antonio Business Journal, TX)

Invasive fungal infections, including histoplasmosis , coccidioidomycosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis, blastomycosis, and pneumocystosis ... Among opportunistic infections, tuberculosis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, candidiasis, coccidioidomycosis, listeriosis, and pneumocystosis were the most common. (PR Newswire)

Sexually Transmitted Infections: Transistors Used To Detect Fungus Candida Albicans  May 12, 2009
This yeast can cause anything from simple mycosis of the skin to complicated cases of candidiasis. It is much more commonly found in patients suffering from immunodeficiency, tumours, diabetes and lymphomas, among other diseases. (Science Daily)
