In July, the state recorded its first death from Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a rare disease spread by the American dog tick, a species common in Minnesota. The American dog tick, or wood tick, is the most common and is the main carrier of tularemia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever according to Michael Catangui, entomologist for South Dakota State University. The deer tick is the primary species responsible for causing Lyme disease, but has been found in only five counties - Codington, Marshall, Deuel, Brookings and Minnehaha.
