"To have quality child care and other school readiness programs has been an important goal," said Jean Gowen, director of Childcare Resource and Referral of Athens, an organization that helps parents in 12 counties find a pre-K program. "We know from a lot of the research that having quality programs, especially for children growing up in poverty, that it's important, because if they're about to enter school and have already taken pre-K, they're much more apt to succeed," Gowen said.
