    To me the practice smacks of prudish Victorian morality (the practice did pick up in the US during those times as an anti-masturbation measure, among other things). Even worse than the dubious roots of the practice is the principle of the thing: it is a sometimes-damaging form of body modification that is waged against an unwilling, unconsenting person-in-the-making.
