With motion- and time-based media becoming commonplace in design school curricula, traditional definitions of graphic design are growing obsolete. Some undergraduate educational institutions are aggressively scrapping old ways of teaching in favor of novel approaches that combine new media and teaching methods. (BusinessWeek)
Moses Wong, Director, Temasek Design School, Temasek Polytechnic, said: "We are in discussions with organisations and agencies that are focused on medical, R&D. And we think the people who are working with eldercare services will be very useful because you don't want to have products that don't work or don't benefit.". Previous grants included 590,000 to the Iowa State University satellite design school being created on Historic Fourth Street and for way-finding signage. The last expected grant probably will be for relocating the Sioux City Museum downtown into the former JCPenney building. (Sioux City Journal)
As part of the Great Places endeavor to boost Sioux City quality of life aspects, the design school was announced in 2006. Located a half block south of Beth's Flowers, 1014 Fourth St., near Tom Foolery's Pub and adjacent to a historic brick alleyway, the site is being renovated with a Great Places grant of 530,000. And yes, there's a flowering of design schools and ad agencies, but the work they produce is derivative, unimaginative, uncreative. But I've also listened to leaders of global technology companies and of giant multinational ad agencies talk about shifting more and more high-end work to China because they see the talent pool there as being increasingly at least as good as that in the West.
