News and Articles on Perpetual Motion Machines

Researchers aren't resistant to properties of 'supersolid'  Dec 11, 2007
Supersolidity could enable persistent flows on the surface of chips and eventually, perhaps, perpetual motion machines. This new state of matter--supersolidity--was demonstrated at University of Alberta physicists by professor John Beamish, chair of the Department of Physics, and his doctoral candidate James Day. On the smell of an oily rag  Oct 17, 2007
"But the scientific community seems to be united in the fact that there is no single big-fix solution. "At every event I get people queueing up with their perpetual motion machines and claims of 'I'm going to run this car on sea water. I was always taught to treat everything with curiosity, not prejudice; but most of those sorts of examples don't take much curiosity before you decide to go look for something else. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Australia)

The Investment Guide  Apr 29, 2007
By Michael Maiello Certain investors think there's money to be made from perpetual motion machines. Oh, really. (Forbes -- Markets)

Fitz: Solar & Wind Power  Apr 24, 2007
Even if perpetual motion machines or Star Trek replicators could increase the production of solar and wind by nine million percent, there would still be a shortage of energy. In a type of perverted Malthusianism, the market creates artificial desires faster than the planets ecosystems can sustain them. (Zmag.org)

Fitzh: Consumption, No Tomorrow  Apr 22, 2007
Perpetual motion machines, biomass and biofuels will not halt species extinction caused by climate change. Again, efficiency and solar and wind power are critical components of a sustainable society. (Zmag.org)

The Song of Songs:  Apr 19, 2007
The Bible is like my grandmother's basement, which is a magnificent hodgepodge of everything from jam jars to 83-year-old report cards to failed perpetual motion machines. The Bible, too, has everything under the sun. (Slate)

Leaps of faith  Feb 21, 2007
No wonder so much damage control is needed every time yet another outlandish claim is made for "breakthroughs" like cold fusion, room temperature superconductivity or perpetual motion machines. If there's been an equal swell in the number of people subscribing to magical interpretations of existence it's because the line dividing the world of empirical analysis from emotional needs is progressively getting blurred. (India Times, India)

Another source for alternative power  Feb 3, 2007
Daniel wrote on February 02, 2007 11:57 AM:"I would expect McNerney to understand the first law of thermodynamics, which places a limit on the amount of energy that can be produced by a solar array or a windmill. Since these are not perpetual motion machines, there is a minimum size requirement which is very very big, and expensive, but not as much as the NAFTA Superhighway.". Daniel wrote on February 02, 2007 11:22 AM:"Has enyone ever thought about having a nuclear power half-way between Galt,... (Lodi News Sentinel, CA)

Leonardo da Vinci, Victoria & Albert Museum, London  Sep 14, 2006
I come out reeling - but compared with Leonardo, feeling as useless as one of his perpetual motion machines. Until January 7. (Guardian Unlimited)

Perpetual Motion Claim Probed  Aug 22, 2006
"(We are) concerned that in this period of unprecedented scientific advance, misguided or fraudulent claims of perpetual motion machines and other sources of unlimited free energy are proliferating," the group said. "Such devices directly violate the most fundamental laws of nature, laws that have guided the scientific progress that is transforming our world.". (Wired News)

Canadian Scientists Regrow Teeth  Jun 30, 2006
Just add it to the list of other bullshit vaporware impractical/impossible inventions that show up every once in a while trying to grab funding/sucker dollars: holographic memory, ridiculous compression technologies, flying cars, perpetual motion machines, etc. I find it pretty amazing that almost all of the responses in this thread just assume that these guys are telling the truth about their "discovery". (Slashdot)

Bush fighting back  Mar 25, 2006
No sooner than he quit making the rounds his numbers started to crater again because his attackers are indefatigable, perpetual motion machines whose raison d' tre is to savage him and undermine his presidency. Mr. Bush's purpose then was not to rehabilitate his poll numbers, but to respond to his critics and set the record straight. (Town Hall)
