Sul Ross students ‘dig’ summer archaelogy class Jul 19, 2008
ALPINE This summer, six Sul Ross State University students enrolled in an archaeology class and the group excavated in a rockshelter on the 02 Ranch, south of Alpine. The purpose of the class was to provide students with the opportunity to get hands-on experience with archaeological work in the field, and the rockshelter proved to be a good training ground. Westmoreland said he was taking an archaeology class at Cornell that covered colonial gravestones and recognized many of the designs from the cemetery at St. Paul's. The oldest surviving tombstone dates to 1740 at the graveyard, where 11 to 24 Colonial soldiers from the Revolutionary War are buried, he said. (Stamford Advocate)

It was an archaeology class and we, the students getting six credits and a tan, were searching for evidence of a small academy that predated the college on the back of the current campus.
