When my family moved to Alabama in the early 60s they were just phasing out cotton picking schedule, which called for some school in the summer along with some time to work in the cotton, and a month off in late fall to bring in and chop the cotton. I don t think anything is necessarily sacrosanct, but some folks do have preferences based on what works for their family. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
