News and Articles on Biogeochemical Cycles

First Measure Of Africa's Coastal Forests: Swampy Mangrove Destruction Threatens Shrimp Farming  Aug 26, 2009
Fleets of robotic sensors, networking through thin cables, can track environmental changes such as biogeochemical cycles or loss of biodiversity. . (Science Daily)

Earth's biogeochemical cycles, once in concert, falling out of sync  Aug 4, 2009
They will present results of research supported through various National Science Foundation (NSF) efforts, including coupled biogeochemical cycles (CBC) funding. CBC is an emerging scientific discipline that looks at how Earth's biogeochemical cycles interact ... Chemical compounds are passed from one organism to another, and from one part of the biosphere to another, through biogeochemical cycles. (EurekAlert!)

Oceanography: Low Summer Iron Availability Limits Biological Production In The High-latitude North Atlantic  Jul 27, 2009
Their measurements were performed on a cruise aboard the RRS Discovery within the central Iceland Basin during the summer of 2007, and the findings are published this month in the scientific journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles. The researchers found that the concentration of dissolved iron in surface waters was very low, as was biological production, despite the presence of residual nitrate. (Science Daily)

Frozen Carbon In Arctic Could Worsen Warming  Jul 6, 2009
The carbon assessment is published this week in the journal of Global Biogeochemical Cycles (GB2023, doi:10. 1029/2008GB003327) of the American Geophysical Union, and the radiocarbon study was recently published in the journal of Nature. (Science Daily)

Updates: Whatever Happened to Hubble's Last Fix?  Jun 17, 2009
The study, in the May 1 Global Biogeochemical Cycles, also finds that the North Pacific has seen a 30 percent rise in mercury contamination since the mid-1990s. More Choices, More Happiness. (Scientific American)

Toxic mercury in seas tied to algae, air  May 13, 2009
Their results appeared in the journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles. "It was totally surprising that they were able to detect an increase in mercury concentration in the Pacific Ocean," said Vincent St. Louis, a biogeochemist at the University of Alberta. (MSNBC -- Environment)

Global Warming: Ocean Iron Disappoints  May 7, 2009
Global Biogeochemical Cycles, DOI. Adapted from materials provided by. (Science Daily)

How Mercury Emissions Reach Tuna And Other Seafood, And Why Mercury Contamination Is Likely To Worsen  May 4, 2009
ScienceDaily (May 3, 2009) A new landmark study documents for the first time the process in which increased mercury emissions from human sources across the globe, and in particular from Asia, make their way into the North Pacific Ocean and as a result contaminate tuna and other seafood. Because much of the mercury that enters the North Pacific comes from the atmosphere, scientists have predicted an additional 50 percent increase in mercury in the Pacific by 2050 if mercury emission rates... (Science Daily)

U.S. Geological Survey Mercury Study Misleads Americans About Seafood and Health, Says Center for Consumer Freedom  May 2, 2009
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists, whose work was published today in the journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles, tested only ocean water, not fish. Despite the lack of any new data on mercury levels in actual seafood, a USGS press release claimed that "increased mercury emissions from human sources... contaminate tuna and other seafood.". (PR Newswire)

Climate Change Leads To Major Decrease In Carbon Dioxide Storage  Apr 11, 2009
There were massive changes in the coastal carbon cycle, and it was similar throughout the ocean, says Dr. Thomas, who wrote about the study in Global Biogeochemical Cycles ... Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2008; 22 (4): GB4027 DOI. (Science Daily)

Earth scientist Martin joins other experts in global warming fight  Apr 3, 2009
Her research techniques include measuring the chemical composition of fossils and investigating variations in biogeochemical cycles. In 2006, Martin co-authored a study showing how the food that people eat is just as important as what kind of cars they drive when it comes to creating the greenhouse gas emissions that many scientists have linked to global warming.
