For Adam Pascal, who is reprising the leading role of Roger, a dynamically anguished HIV-positive songwriter he created in the original production of "Rent," the connection between the two shows runs much further back. He didn't have an inkling of it when he was growing up in the suburban New York town of Woodbury, Long Island, but both he and his around-the-corner neighbor - and future "Rent" and "Wicked" star - Idina Menzel were destined for parallel Broadway tracks.
