Letter From Japan Mar 6, 2009
It's a key characteristic of Japanese history, from the emperor's 1,400-year lineage to the father-son inheritance of Kabuki theater roles. The cabinet chosen by Aso, the grandson of one former prime minister and the son-in-law of another, fits a similar pattern. (International Herald Tribune)

A stock market rally, for no good reason Feb 25, 2009
"Some of the political sting of the word "nationalization" may already have dissipated, given the public statements in favor of some form of temporary government-mediated restructuring from the likes of Alan Greenspan and even some Republican senators. Citigroup's request that the government become a stakeholder owning 40 percent of its common stock would seem to be a preemptive admission that the bank will not pass the "stress test" due to begin this week. So perhaps this is some kind of kabuki... (Salon)
Blaming Obama for the stock market crash Feb 24, 2009
So perhaps this is some kind of kabuki dance in which both sides know that the ultimate resolution will be quasi-nationalization, but want to get to that point without Wall Street as a whole losing its mind over the specter of the second coming of V. I. Lenin. Not that we should worry too much about Wall Street's sanity, but a full-bore market panic could mean the difference between having to nationalize one or two or three big banks, or all of them. Lessons in heroism from the maestros Feb 21, 2009
The orchestra's playing was truly beautiful, and it was a joy for the audience to watch Maestro Yazaki conducting by "dancing" to the tune, resembling the graceful movements of a kabuki (Japanese opera) player. A pause - and then the drum rolls as the great "Eroica", Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, op. (Jakarta Post, Indonesia -- Features)

A sense of NOSTALGIA Feb 16, 2009
I am probably not alone in that the very little acquaintance I have with Japanese theatre is limited to that of the three classical forms kabuki, noh and bunraku puppet theatre. Everything from music, costume, make-up and a strictly codefied performance style adds up to a theatre experience that is intensely hard for a Western audience to comprehend. (The West Australian)

"Friday the 13th" Feb 13, 2009
Here of course I must risk the wrath of the spoiler cops, whose vigilance is even sillier than usual when you're talking about a movie whose every movement is as foreordained as Kabuki theater performed in a Calvinist church. Perhaps to engage the chronic attention deficit of his audience, Nispel essentially repeats the same story three times, at different speeds. (Salon)
