In 1929, a Hungarian novelist named Frigyes Karinthy wrote a story called "Chains" in which a character discovers that any person in the world can be linked to any other through at most five acquaintances. This was fiction and although Karinthy's story went out of print overnight his insight about how we are connected was the first appearance of what we have come to know as "six degrees of separation.".
