Indeed, the Cajun culture was almost wiped out, beginning with the exile imposed almost 300 years ago on the Acadians in Canada (Cajun is a shortened form of Acadian), about a third of whom survived their wanderings to build a new community on the prairies and along the bayous of southern Louisiana. Furthermore, our town is called "New Iberia" and our parish is called "Iberia Parish" for good reasons: "Iberia" is an old name for Spain, and, as you may know, a lot of Spanish families settled here.
