Today, the grounds of the Louisiana Capitol were reserved for all who wish to pay their respects to the legendary former coach of Grambling State University. When Robinson died last week at the age of 88, state officials immediately made plans for him to lie in state, an honor more often bestowed upon political leaders such as Huey Long, the former governor and U.S. senator whose days in power coincided with Robinson s youth. To sports history, Gregory will always be the first white football player at Grambling State University. In 1971, Bruce Bahrenburg wrote a book about it -- "My Little Brother's Coming Tomorrow" -- and to this day it is one of Gregory's few regrets, allowing the book to be written while he was still in college. And no matter who talks about him, the same theme resonates throughout: He was more than just a coach, he was a father-figure who took great pains to see that his players grew not only as athletes but as men also.
