For most of his projects, Hatala places a rough piece of wood on his lathe (which spins the work in a circle) and begins shaping his raw material with the lathe and his hand tools. Once the piece is shaped, Hatala "excavates" the inside of the wood and leaves the work to dry for as long as nine months. (Athens Banner-Herald)
