The New York Times reported that 30-year-old fashion designer Alice Roi was one of the many children enchanted by the tales of the little French girl. However, she had no idea that Ludwig Bemelmans, an Austrian immigrant, sketched the first illustrations at Pete's Tavern on East 18th Street, just blocks away from where Roi lives with her husband, the report said.
