Medicinal Plant, St John's Wort, May Reduce Neuronal Degeneration Caused By Parkinson's Disease May 14, 2009
The evaluation of antioxidant enzymes levels, superoxide dismutases, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, conclude that administration both St John's wort extracts can prevent the increase of the three enzymes, reducing them significantly. St John's wort reduces the exacerbated production of Reactive oxygen species produced in the presence of Rotenone, as well as the damage that the free radicals cause dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, avoiding the action of apoptosis. Melatonin May Be Served As Potential Anti-fibrotic Drug Apr 8, 2009
Hepatic oxidative stress markers were evaluated by changes in the amount of lipid peroxides, measured as malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in liver homogenates. Serum hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN), and procollagen 3 N-terminal peptide (P3NP) were determined as serum markers of hepatic fibrogenesis. (Science Daily)
Modular evolution of glutathione peroxidase genes in association with different biochemical properties of their encoded proteins in invertebrate animals Apr 6, 2009
Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidases (PHGPx), the most abundant isoforms of GPx families, interfere directly with hydroperoxidation of lipids. Biochemical properties of these proteins vary along with their donor organisms, which has complicated the phylogenetic classification of diverse PHGPx-like proteins. (BioMed Central)

Subjects in the current report were randomly selected for a sub-study on the effect of the intervention on oxidized LDL and on the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). The average age of the patients was 68, and a slight majority was female. (Nogales International, AZ)
Nanoreactors For Reaction Cascades Aug 22, 2007
To demonstrate the potential of their nanoreactors , the researchers bound the enzyme horseradish peroxidase into the membrane itself ... This reaction formed hydrogen peroxide, which is just what the horseradish peroxidase was waiting for in order to convert the sample substrate ABTS (2,2 -azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) also contained in the solution into its radical cation. Tracing Parkinson's Lethal Mechanism Jul 11, 2007
This enzyme is known as a peroxidase and acts to render harmless the chemically active reactive oxygen species that are produced inside mitochondria in the process of generating energy for the cell. Specifically, the researchers found that treating neurons with MPTP activates Cdk5 to switch off Prx2. (Science Daily)
New Micro-chip Detector Will Be Able To Detect Thousands Of Substances May 3, 2007
Diazonium chemistry was used to selectively deposit the enzyme horseradish peroxidase, which was then used to electrochemically detect hydrogen peroxide. Electrochemical detection holds many advantages over other common optical-based biosenors. (Science Daily)
Alteon Expands Licensing Agreement With Biorap Technologies for Diagnostic Assays That Identify High Risk Cardiovascular Patients Apr 6, 2007
Alteon believes that these results support the development of ALT- 2074, a glutathione peroxidase mimetic, as a therapy for diabetic patients with the Hp 2-2 genotype ... The Company's portfolio also includes orally bioavailable, organoselenium mimics of glutathione peroxidase that metabolize lipid peroxides and have the potential to limit myocardial damage subsequent to a myocardial infarction. Fuel for the future: JSU scientists experimenting with sawdust Apr 4, 2007
"Rather than depend on even higher gas prices to drive people to ethanol, the JSU scientists want to find a cheaper way to produce their version. They believe federal and state governments should provide tax incentives to spur on the renewable energy business.Even so, it will take time to translate JSU's research into the ultimate goal: a commercially viable venture, Hwang says."The other main consideration is that car manufacturers must produce vehicles that use this fuel," says Maria Begonia,...
