News and Articles on Electron Acceptor

Special coating greatly improves solar cell performance  Feb 23, 2008
This cell utilizes a layer consisting of a mixture of a semiconducting polymer (an electron donor) and a fullerene (an electron acceptor) sandwiched between two electrodes -- one a transparent electrically conducting electrode (the anode, which is usually a tin-doped indium oxide) and a metal (the cathode), such as aluminum. When light enters through the transparent conducting electrode and strikes the light-absorbing polymer layer, electricity flows due to formation of pairs of electrons and... (EurekAlert!)

Mud battery stops marine rust  Oct 27, 2006
The electrons are eventually dumped onto an 'electron acceptor' normally oxygen. But in the microbial battery they are shunted onto an electrode. (Nature News Service)

Two cyanobacteria "reach out" with protein-and-iron nanowires to deposit electrons in their environment. The nanowires could eventually be harnessed to make more powerful bacterial fuel cells. (photo: Yuri Gorby)  Jul 28, 2006
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Shewanella oneidensis cultivated with electron acceptor limitation ... This lack of oxygen, a key electron acceptor in the transfer process, left the bacteria stuck with an excess of electrons ... To get rid of them, the bugs had to reach out to other electron acceptors: metal ions. (Discover Magazine)
