Uravan lawsuit: Health hazards from the past versus today  Sep 13, 2009
Mining occupational health exposure, including that at current uranium mines, is difficult to control for ionizing radiation or gamma and beta radiation that results from worker drilling and blasting surrounding concentrated veins of uranium. The ionizing radiation exposure levels at yellowcake mills, even in the poorly documented unregulated past, were probably somewhat lower than those at mines although they may have exposed much more of the residential population through tailings. New Skin Cancer Patch: Possible Alternative To Surgery  Jun 19, 2009
Sealed patches containing radioactive phosphorus-32 that deliver beta radiation to the cancer site were custom-made according to the shape and size of each patient's skin cancer lesions ... Phosporous-32 poses no external radiation hazards, and its limited range prevents beta radiation from reaching the bone or underlying blood vessels, thus sparing the bone and bone marrow. Regulators act after Wal-Mart loses radioactive signs  Feb 18, 2009
The NRC says tritium emits "low-energy beta radiation that cannot penetrate a sheet of paper or clothing. If inhaled, it leaves the body relatively quickly.". Wal-Mart spokeswoman Daphne Moore said the signs were used in about 4,500 Walmart facilities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. (USA Today -- Money)
