Raptors Survival Can Be Threatened By Ingesting Lead And Cadmium Jul 24, 2008
The research has been published recently in the journal entitled Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety , and establishes what type of bird tissue hyper-accumulates metallic elements such as cadmium (in this case the kidneys) would be the most suitable in biological monitoring studies. The research also establishes how the geographic area and the diurnal and nocturnal habits of the raptors can influence the elements quantified. (Science Daily)
Earthworm Detectives Provide Genetic Clues For Dealing With Soil Pollution Jun 9, 2008
This multidisciplinary research shows that a systems approach to ecotoxicology, combining technologies usually used in isolation, can be a powerful tool for understanding the response of an ecologically important organism to contaminants, and opens up the possibility of new and more effective soil monitoring and bioremediation strategies. Dr Kille concluded "The ubiquitous nature of the earthworm makes it an accepted part of our everyday world. People don't ask themselves how worms survive in... (Science Daily)
Mandarin man studies red tide's effect on coral reefs Jun 8, 2008
Scientists including Ross; Valerie Paul, director of the Smithsonian Marine Station; and Richard Pierce, director of Motes Center for Ecotoxicology, applied for the grant in 2006. The proceeds from the Protect our Reefs Florida speciality license plate are donated to the Motes Marine Laboratory, which distributes the funds to organizations throughout the state for research, education and for conservation of the coral reef system, according to the Motes Web site. Jennifer Bouldin chosen Teacher of the Year (1) May 28, 2008
Dr. Jennifer Bouldin, director of Arkansas State University s Ecotoxicology Research Facility, has been presented the James Bailey Memorial Educator of the Year Award. The award was established by the Arkansas Water Environment Association in memory of James Bailey in recognition of his many years devoted service to the people of the state of Arkansas, the Water Environment Federation, the Arkansas Water Environment Association, and the Arkansas Environmental Academy. Scientists find mercury threatens next generation of loons Mar 5, 2008
The results of the 18-year study on loonsa species symbolic of northern lakes and wildernessappear in the most recent edition of Ecotoxicology. This study demonstrates how top predators such as common loons can be used as the proverbial canaries-in-the-coalmine for pollutants that concern humans as well, said David C. Evers of the BioDiversity Research Institute and lead author of the study. (EurekAlert!)
Fishing for alternatives Apr 1, 2007
The move is in response to a European Commission directive to replace the use of animals in ecotoxicology which has seen the establishment of a European Centre for Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) Taskforce composed of Commission and non-Commission experts giving scientific advice on 3Rs methods and testing strategies. As an example, Dr Richard Handy at the University of Plymouth has developed a perfusion method where he can dose particular fish organs with various levels of chemicals... (EurekAlert!)
Red Tide in the Gulf Of Mexico Feb 23, 2007

Ecotoxicologist Appointed to National Scientific Panel UCR, Jan. 11 Jan 12, 2007
Daniel Schlenk, a professor of aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental toxicology in UC Riverside's Department of Environmental Sciences, has been appointed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) Scientific Advisory Panel for a three-year term, beginning this month. Trained in human and ecotoxicology, Schlenk will lend the panel his expertise to better evaluate the safety of pesticides. (University of California Newswire, CA)
New Study Shows Promise Of Toxicogenomics In Environmental Monitoring Dec 26, 2006
The study, published online today (Wednesday, Dec. 20) in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, focused on the water flea Daphnia magna, considered the lab rat of ecotoxicology because of its sensitivity to contaminants in its environment. The organism is commonly used by regulators to monitor freshwater toxicity, but the tests used typically look at levels of toxicity that will kill the water flea within 24 hours of exposure. Mote now has online red tide report Sep 1, 2006
The Beach Conditions Report is a joint program funded by the Florida Department of Health and implemented by Dr. Barbara Kirkpatrick, manager of Mote's Environmental Health Program in the Center for Ecotoxicology, and J.R. Ayers, Sarasota County lifeguard operations manager. Through the work of Richard Pierce, director of Mote's Center for Ecotoxicology, and David Pouso, the health department's Healthy Beaches coordinator, health department staff members are collecting additional water samples... Weakened but still wet, Ernesto rolls into state Aug 30, 2006
The intensity and direction of the wind could cause people to have red-tide related breathing problems, said Rich Pierce, head of Mote's Center for Ecotoxicology. In South Florida, locals -- many of whom lived through last year's Hurricane Wilma and still others who survived Hurricane Andrew in 1992 -- were unfazed by the gray clouds and blustering winds. Red Tide Creeps Up On Bradenton Aug 24, 2006
And the red tides start," Walsh was quoted as saying on the Web site. He could not be reached for this article. The Trichodesmium off Anna Maria Island on Wednesday pushed red tide concentrations to 10 million organisms per liter, "a really heavy hit," said Charles Hunsicker, director of Manatee County's Conservation Lands Management Department. Hunsicker worried that the red tide could put a damper on the world skimboarding championship, slated for this weekend at Bradenton Beach. "We're... (Tampa Bay Online, FL -- News)
Clear -- for now -- in Englewood, tide creeping north Aug 12, 2006
At Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Richard Pierce, the director of the Center for Ecotoxicology, said sampling earlier this week indicated the algae was hanging around in the water from Venice to Boca Grande. But it was slowly moving north, he said. (Charlotte Sun Herald)
Expression of target and reference genes in Daphnia magna exposed to ibuprofen Jul 8, 2006
