Edie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Milton and Vergil Haas; daughter, Edith Ann Honold; son-in-law, Gerhard Honold; granddaughter, Hanna Honold; and daughter-in-law Mari (Halbakken) Broschat. She is survived by her husband, Dick of Williston; son, John (Lydia) Broschat of Williston; and daughter Mary (Pete) Anderson of Moorhead; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and numerous friends in Williston and different parts of the world. Hampton man killed in Waterloo accident (2813) Jan 16, 2008
Waterloo police said Marvin Vergil Smith, 65, died at the scene after he apparently lost control of his 1991 Mercury and slammed into a Chevrolet pickup truck that had been hauling the couch. Smith's passenger, 73-year-old Joan Capalla-Smith, also of Hampton, was taken to Covenant Medical Center for "incapacitating" injuries, according to the accident report. Our high school strongly encouraged college-bound students to study Latin, so I did for four years, memorizing chunks of Vergil and Cicero that still bounce around in my head today. By 1966, I had also studied French for six years, discovering over time that I had a good ear for the language and a lasting distaste for existentialist novels. (Winona Daily News, MN)
