Appetite for Destruction  Sep 13, 2008
Americans, Reinhold Niebuhr observed, seek a solution for practically every problem of life in quantitative terms, certain that more is better. This relationship between expansion, abundance, and freedom reached its apotheosis in the aftermath of World War II. Assisted by the fratricidal behavior of the European powers and reckless Japanese policies that culminated in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. emerged as a global superpower, while the American people came to enjoy a standard of living... But no modern Jewish thinker has had as profound an effect on other faiths as Heschel has; the Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr said he was "an authoritative voice not only in the Jewish community but in the religious life of America." Nor has any Jewish theologian since Heschel succeeded in speaking to such a wide range of readers while rigorously attending to the nuances of Judaism. Brooks channels the late sociologist David Riesman to declare that Obama is a secure "inner-directed man," who was "forged by the process of discovering his own identity." Then, channeling Abraham Lincoln, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Isaiah Berlin, Brooks expostulates about Obama as a man with a tragic sense of life and acute powers of observation relying chiefly, like the Globe, on Obama's semi-fictional memoir.
