A rush for royalty Feb 28, 2008
Over the decades, savvy single women have trod through the pages of Judith Krantz and Erica Jong, Sophie Kinsella, Candace Bushnell and, of course, Helen Fielding, who birthed the '90s "it girl" of the genre, Bridget Jones. The millennium is bringing a boomlet in historical bodice-rippers -- these figures were not just princesses of the Upper East Side, but real royalty, who often paid for their ambition with their lives, or at least, their loins. Carrie Fisher tames her demons in solo show Feb 21, 2008
" Eventually, she had the material for a one-woman show. In a scenario that sounds stolen from her first novel, "Postcards From the Edge," Fisher workshopped "Wishful Drinking" in the living room of her Beverly Hills home. Writer friends like Helen Fielding ("Bridget Jones's Diary") and Michael Tolkin ("The Player") dropped by and gave her pointers. She performed it at home several times ("Oh, 10 or 20, I don't remember") and eventually shaped it into a play. For Fisher, who once said her... (San Francisco Chronicle)

Partly, of course, because Bridget's such a fan of my adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice." So when I got asked to adapt it, I made it a condition that I would be allowed a night out with Helen Fielding and we would go to all her favorite wine bars and get drunk on Chardonnay. And indeed we did, and became quite good buddies. (Boston Globe)

Bridget Jones came into being in 1995 when Helen Fielding went to interview Colin Firth after he had played Mr Darcy in the BBC TV series of Pride and Prejudice, wet shirt and all. When the interview was published in The Independent Fielding used the byline "Bridget Jones" and when she was working the series "Bridget Jones's Diary" into a novel she wrote Mark Darcy into it as the older, richer, smarter guy whom ditsy Bridget would eventually end up with. Austen's sex and sensibility Aug 6, 2007
The next year Helen Fielding updated Pride and Prejudice for Bridget Jones' Diary, naming her hero Mark Darcy and highlighting how intricately Austen's popularity has been tied to films. Bridget is not crazy about Austen's Darcy, but about Colin Firth as Darcy; in the novel's sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, she obsesses over the scene of him emerging from a dip in a lake in a dripping wet shirt.
