CATHOLIC JOE'S ABORTION WOE Aug 26, 2008
Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King - indeed, the majority of great reformers in American history - were not only motivated by faith, but repeatedly used religious language to argue for their cause. "To say that men and women should not inject their 'personal morality' into public-policy debates is a practical absurdity. Our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition.". (New York Post -- Opinions)

What Obama Has Yet To Learn About Slavery, Race And U.S. Exceptionalism Aug 23, 2008
When the famed black abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, studied the compromises made over slavery in the original Constitution, he concluded that it was nothing less than a "glorious liberty document.". From 1776 through the early 1800s, America witnessed the greatest anti-slavery movement ever, as half of the original states abolished slavery and active anti-slavery societies sprang up elsewhere, the importation of African slaves was outlawed, and the spread of slavery was prohibited. This is an acidic review of a biography of Frederick Douglass, the slave who became a formidable orator for abolition and later a respected public servant (the title is a quoted reaction to Douglass's modest request to be paid for his services).
