As Epicurus well knew. " Epicurus and his Garden School of Athens in around 306 B.C. provide such a strong foundation for Harrison's arguments that he calls Epicurus "my real hero in the book ... " Harrison, the Italian-born chair of the university's department of French and Italian and also host of a music-and-talk radio show on Stanford's KZSU called "Entitled Opinions" is, of course, no stranger to expressing his opinions. He talks about the personal meaning in the metaphor provided by... (San Francisco Chronicle)

"Say, this sack of potatoes weights 10 Gadian tons"? Or are those sub atomic particles in the same family of protons and neutrons? And what does "Gadiantons" have to do with the Federal reserve? Did the Book of More-men predicted the result of today's NCAA basketball game? What kind of pot does Northenor smoke... (Logan Herald Journal, UT)

And $15 million was spent on the Palm Court, where many New Yorkers of a certain age have splurged on or have been treated to a Sunday brunch that would delight Epicurus and give Midas pause. The 800-room hotel closed three years ago for renovations. (New York Times)

Death be not loud  Feb 25, 2008
Thus, pace Nabokov, Greek philosopher Epicurus and his Roman disciple Lucretius both anticipated Scottish empiricist David Hume in saying that death is nothing to be feared, no worse than contemplating the nothingness whence we came. But theirs were minority reports, and one must be alive to do the contemplating. (Globe and Mail)

    John Kessler  Jan 30, 2008
I've never disliked the word "epicure," which conjures third century B.C. Greek philosopher Epicurus and his belief in fulfillment through happiness and pleasure. Gastronome also has its purpose, though it risks sounding snooty, and Ms. Foodie always wins against Herr Snoot. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

    * [BOOK REVIEW] 'Irreligion' appeals to neither heathens nor believers  Jan 27, 2008
As for Paulos' discussion of the contradictions involved in a deity being both omnipotent and benevolent, it consists of little more than regurgitation of the Epicurus aphorism to the effect that if God is willing to prevent evil but unable to, then he is not omnipotent; that if he is able to but unwilling, then he is malevolent; and that if he is both able and willing to prevent evil, then there is no explanation for evil's continued existence. Although Paulos begins Irreligion by promising... (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- World)

Annals of astronomy: The ancient search for life out there  Nov 13, 2007
The philosopher Epicurus wrote in the 4 th century BC that "there are infinite worlds both like and unlike this world of ours." In the 13th century, Albertus Magnus posed the question, "Do there exist many worlds, or is there but a single world?" Magnus went on to say, "This is one of the most noble and exalted questions in the study of Nature." In 'Thanks!' Robert Emmons explains why it's good to be grateful  Aug 20, 2007
Perhaps this is what Emmons is getting at when he writes, "The lesson here is that we need to choose our comparisons wisely. Epicurus wrote, 'Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things only hoped for.' Gratitude is the realization that we have everything we need, at the moment." Such language treads perilously close to self-help pabulum; it also expresses timeless truth. Emmons wisely notes that "[F]eeling as if we... (San Francisco Chronicle)

" Laksmi had honed her modus operandi as Epicurus, her food critic nom de plume: like a spy she would go clandestine into restaurants, tasting without telling them she was reviewing. Spending around Rp 100 million of her own over nine months on eating out before sponsorship kicked in, her audacity was rewarded. Within two-and-a-half months the first print sold out and she went on to sell 10,000 more copies, as well as a subsequent edition. "There was a demand for it: Jakarta is a fantastic... "It is never too late or too early to care for the well-being of the soul," Epicurus said, and so we make our lives a study of ourselves. We need a moment in the year when we look at ourselves, weigh our good and bad habits, evaluate our conduct as a doctor evaluates our health during an annual examination, so we can strive for a way of life that is wiser and more responsible.
