Thousand-ruby Galaxy: Pinwheel Shines In The Darkness Sep 3, 2008
Decades later it was listed in the famous catalogue of deep sky objects compiled by another French astronomer and famous comet hunter, Charles Messier. Recent observations of this enigmatic galaxy in ultraviolet light and radio waves have shown that even its outer desolate regions (farther out than those seen in this image) are populated with baby stars. Milky Way look-alike is a 'ruby'-studded stunner Sep 3, 2008
Decades later French astronomer and comet hunter Charles Messier added it to his catalog of deep sky objects. The ESO reports: "Messier 83 is also one of the most prolific producers of supernovae, that is, exploding stars: this is one of the two galaxies which had 6 supernovae in the past 100 years. One of these, SN 1957D, was observable for 30 years!". (USA Today -- Tech)

Deep Sky Observing May 29, 2008
The classic Messier catalog of deep sky objects first started simply as a list of non-comet items ... In doing so, he revealed a treasure trove of nebulae, galaxies, comets and other deep sky gems never before seen ... Some deep sky objects appeared to move, named comets, while others remained stationary, generally called nebulae. (Suite101.com)

SKY GAZING IN CARMEL VALLEY Mar 1, 2008
"If you're into interplanetary observation, you need a refractor. For deep sky viewing, you need a reflector.". Since scopes can cost anywhere from $80 to $12,000, affordability and portability seem to be the first-time buyer's biggest concerns. (San Francisco Chronicle -- Science)
