Getting the hang of it  Jul 19, 2008
One of Teitelbaum's favourite examples of this will occur on a fourth-floor landing, where visitors will be greeted by an Alexander Calder mobile overhead and beneath it three small sculptures on pedestals dating from the period 1960-62: one by British modernist Barbara Hepworth, the second by French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois and the third by the Inuit artist Louise Anguatsiark Tungilik. "These women were not in dialogue at the time," Teitelbaum says, "but they can be now." Museums are... (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

    Strange fiction  Jun 14, 2008
The Whitechapel exhibition marked the changing of the avant-garde, the moment at which Hamilton and other pop artists overthrew Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Graham Sutherland. Ballard refers to the latter group, a touch severely perhaps, as "artists in favour with the Arts Council and the British Council" - one of several swipes he takes in the direction of subsidising art by "the taxes of people on modest incomes". Tracey Emin: My Life In A Column  Jun 6, 2008
What I know is the pleasure I've had over the last few weeks in putting this room together: working closely with the other Royal Academicians; dressing up in all my finery and beautiful silver medal; feeling actually very proud to be a Royal Academician and having wonderful conversation with the likes of Adrian Berg RA finding out inside information on Barbara Hepworth that you could never read about, the kind of stuff where you had to be there at the time. It's good fun seeing history, seeing... (Independent)

CHRISTIE'S British art week brings together some of the most famous artists of the mid-20th century: L.S. Lowry, John Piper, Graham Sutherland and two formidable dames, Barbara Hepworth and Elizabeth Frink. But the name that is likely to cause the most excitement among collectors is William Scott. Public to get peek at government's art treasure hoard  May 6, 2008
At the moment the treasures in the London stores include the Lowry and the Freud, a gigantic early 19th seascape by Nicholas Condy of English and French ships off an unidentified port that Johnson hopes some nautical visitor may recognise, and a sinuous white marble sculpture by Barbara Hepworth. But any of those could have been packed off to a new home by the time the doors open to the public on Saturday week. (Guardian Unlimited -- Politics)

'It would set us up for life'  Apr 16, 2008
The odd man out is Stromness, which apart from an ambitious temporary exhibition programme - which local artist and trustee Laura Drever says was a major factor in drawing her back to live and work on Orkney - has a collection which has left some visitors rubbing their eyes in bewilderment: a nationally important assemblage of the St Ives school, from wonky Alfred Wallis ships pulling past slightly crooked lighthouses, to Barbara Hepworth sculptures perched on window sills, and a Ben Nicholson... Hero worship  Feb 19, 2008
" This flowering of public art has been driven locally and is partly due to a greater awareness of the art, prompted by great post-war British sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. There is also a greater access to grants for individuals and groups to use when applying to councils for permission. They are not all successful works of art but at least they demonstrate a willingness to take risks, he says, and they elevate the achievements of local heroes. "Local worthies are hugely important... Art For Our Sake  Aug 9, 2007
" Fisher hasn't maintained the same low profile in political circles, however. The Republican, who has powerful ties inside San Francisco City Hall and in the city's business community, is a regular contributor to local and national campaigns. He is involved in a high-stakes fight over parking spaces in the city that will play out on November's ballot. The Fishers are active philanthropic donors, funding everything from charter schools to museums, with SFMOMA being a regular recipient. Donald... (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

    - Tristram Hunt  Feb 17, 2007
It is safe to say that Wakefield district council's impressive investment in the new Hepworth Gallery is not driven solely by a passion for Barbara Hepworth and 20th-century sculpture. The alternative is utterly self-defeating: cutting budgets, closing galleries, sacking staff. (Guardian Unlimited)
